Moon and Venus setting behind Storm Mountain on Sunday evening.

Monday, August 8th - A Week Of Astronomical Wonders...

Beginning tonight and continuing into next weekend, sky-watchers will be treated to a variety of astronomical wonders. Monday evening, go outside just after sunset and look to the west. You will see a beautiful crescent Moon with Jupiter to the left and Venus to the right (Map). The Moon will also be between the two planets Tuesday evening (Map), though not so centered.

For the rest of the week early risers can catch great views of the planet Mars in the east before sunrise. In addition, the "Perseid Meteor Shower" is near it's peak, which occurs early Friday morning. Many meteors can be seen both prior to and after the peak, which could produce 40- 80 visible meteors per hour under dark clear skies.

This is a great week for scouts and other youth organizations to plan go camping, as well as a great week for the average person with an appreciation for our world and it's many wonders. The summer nights make the Perseid's one of the most viewed meteor showers of the year. The "Leonids", which are often produces an incredible display, occur in mid to late November when temperatures are not as pleasant. Not as many people are willing to brave those cold winter nights. This year's Leonid display is predicted to be lessened by the Moon's brightness, being nearly full during the shower's peak.

So grab a blanket and your family, and spend a little time outside one night this week. Weather permitting it should surely be a great experience for all to share, and very educational!
